Takuan cuts Takezō down from the tree and takes him into Shippoji temple for a period of solitary confinement and study. Days become weeks. When Takezō finally emerges, Takuan gives him a new name: Miyamoto Musashi. The name change is one of the most significant moments in the entire manga — a declaration that the self that existed before is dead, and something entirely new must be built in its place.
