What Happens in Chapter 7
Captured and strung up on a cedar tree by the village, Takezō hangs for days without food or water. What should kill an ordinary man does not kill him. Takuan Soho, the eccentric Zen monk, visits and speaks to him — not with pity or sympathy, but with sharp philosophical challenge. This is the first real conversation between Takuan and Takezō, and it plants the seed that will eventually transform a feral killer into Miyamoto Musashi.

What This Chapter Is Really About
The first meeting between teacher and student — though neither would describe it that way. Takuan sees something in Takezō that no one else has seen: not violence, but potential.
Takuan’s first conversation with the bound Takezō is among the most important scenes in Vagabond. Everything that follows stems from this moment.
Takezō survives the Battle of Sekigahara, is captured, transformed by Takuan Soho, and emerges as Miyamoto Musashi — beginning his journey to become invincible under the heavens.
