What Happens in Chapter 98
One of Vagabond’s great structural chapters — Inoue cuts between Musashi and Kojiro with the precision of a film editor, showing two men on the same road but moving through entirely different inner landscapes. Musashi pushes, questions, suffers, and grows through conscious effort. Kojiro drifts, observes, and grows through pure receptivity. The chapter asks: is there a better path, or are both paths simply the ones these particular men must walk?

What This Chapter Is Really About
There is no correct path to mastery — only the path your nature demands. Musashi cannot be Kojiro; Kojiro cannot be Musashi. The tragedy and the beauty of the manga is that neither can fully understand what the other has.
The final panel — Musashi and Kojiro walking in opposite directions, both toward the same eventual destination — is one of the most quietly powerful images in Vagabond.
The parallel story of Sasaki Kojiro — deaf, isolated, yet touched by a sword genius that may surpass even Musashi — unfolds alongside the main narrative, building toward the most famous duel in Japanese history.
