What Happens in Chapter 5
The pursuit of Takezō intensifies as the village militia closes in. Otsu appears again — playing her shakuhachi flute in quiet contrast to the violence surrounding her. Inoue begins to establish the manga’s central emotional tension: the stillness Otsu represents versus the chaos Takezō carries. This chapter also deepens our understanding of why Takezō is so feared: not his strength, but his complete indifference to his own survival.

What This Chapter Is Really About
Stillness versus chaos. Otsu’s flute against Takezō’s flight. The two poles of Vagabond’s emotional spectrum introduced side by side.
Otsu playing the flute while Takezō rages through the world — one of the great visual contrasts in the manga’s early chapters.
Takezō survives the Battle of Sekigahara, is captured, transformed by Takuan Soho, and emerges as Miyamoto Musashi — beginning his journey to become invincible under the heavens.
