What Happens in Chapter 40
Yoshioka Matashichiro — a child, the last heir of the Yoshioka name — is thrust into the position of head of the school by the desperate disciples who surround him. He is too young to understand what is being asked of him, too young to truly fear Musashi. Inoue uses this child’s innocence to devastating effect: the Yoshioka school, once a symbol of power, now pins its honor on someone who cannot yet carry a sword with both hands.
